Mooberry Farms is a small family run farm based in Northriding Randburg. It all started when we became more concerned about how our current food gets produced and didn’t want our family being forced to eat mass produced, chemically enhanced meat. We also became more aware of how mass produced animals are subjected to harsh, inhumane conditions and wanted to raise animals that were allowed to grow up as naturally as possible without any added anti-biotics, animal by-products or growth stimulants added to their feed, free to run outside in the sun and act as nature intended them to.
At Mooberry Farms we pride ourselves in providing food that is as natural as possible. Our animals are all raised on our own farm & we are passionate about their wellbeing and they are therefore treated with the love and care they deserve. We interact with our animals daily and as a result have tame, happy animals. The farm is not run on a large commercial basis and we are very hands on with their daily routine. All of our products are farmed using Organic Principles as far as possible.
Our eggs are laid by the hardy Bosvelder Indigenous chicken. Our chickens roam outside all day and are free to have sand baths, scratch for bugs, run and fly. These chickens are relaxed and tame and live a stress free life. Their feed is free of anti-biotics, animal by-products, steroids or any type of stimulants. In addition to their normal feed we also give them vegetable off cuts. We also sprout wheat grass and oats and feed these trays on a daily basis, this also just adds variety to their diet. As they roam outside all day they also get to eat a lot of natural food in the form of bugs, grasses and anything that they find that appeals to them. Our laying boxes are in their houses and they are free to come and go as they please during the day to lay their eggs. At night time they come into their houses to roost. We don’t use any unnatural lighting to keep them laying during winter. The bosvelder egg has a lovely deep yellow yolk and has a wonderful taste.
Our meat chickens are all free-range and live out in grass fields during the day and are brought in at night as unfortunately with the broiler they are susceptible to disease so we need to be a little more careful keeping them warm and dry at night. During the day they are able to have sand baths, scratch for bugs, run and fly. These chickens are relaxed and live a stress free life. Their feed is free of anti-biotics, animal by-products, steroids or any type of stimulants. Our chickens are not injected with any brine to increase their selling weight.
We only have jersey cows in our herd as we find the milk to be nice and creamy and make the best cheese and yoghurt. Our cows are all primarily grass fed and only get a small handful of grain at milking time to keep them occupied. Our cows are all hand milked twice a day. They are tested every 6 months for TB just so we know they are truly healthy. When the cows have calves, the calves get to live with their moms until they are weaned at around 6 months old and are not separated at birth as is common practice. We use the milk to manufacture yoghurts , cheeses and butter. All of these products are handmade on our premises. Our products are made with selected live culture and no added stabilisers, preservatives or thickeners are added, so they are truly as natural as possible. All of our cheeses are also made from Raw Milk.
Although not grown on our premise we have sourced truly Grass Fed Beef and Free-Range Pork from a local farmer. The cows are not fed any grain at all and only fed on natural grasses out in the fields. They are not fed any routine anti-biotics and due to the fact that they are only fed grass there meat is free from any growth hormones or stimulants. The animals are born, grown and slaughtered on the property so they are not put under any stress that animals are often put under when going to the abattoirs.
